For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide

Tyler Perry, who’s latest dramedy ‘Why Did I Get Married Too?’ has also become his first UK release, is heading for ‘Precious’ territory with his star-crammed take on the hard-hitting 1975 stage play by Ntozake Shange ‘For Colored Girl Who Have Considered Suicide When The Rainbow Is Enuf’. The play itself is structured on twenty poems and was revolutionary in its day.

Famous for making money from a demographic in America which has gone unserved by mainstream Hollywood, Perry has his own little studio in Georgia where he cranks out melodramas that hit a nerve. Like Woody Allen and others, Perry likes to use the same actors – such as Janet Jackson whose presence certainly doesn’t hurt sales – over and over again. Perry used to sleep in his car, spending months touring his plays around the country; he knows his audience inside out.

This time, it looks like Perry could be going mainstream himself with a massively impressive cast such as Thandie Newton, Whoopi Goldberg, Janet Jackson (natch), Macy Gray and Anika Noni Rose. Have a peek at this trailer. What do you think?
