Fashion pays tribute to McQueen

Fashion’s elite and celebrity fans were among those at late designer Alexander McQueen’s memorial service held in London today (20.09.10).

Kate Moss, Sarah Jessica Parker, Daphne GuinessNaomi Campbell and Stella McCartney – some dressed in towering heels and fascinators in tribute to the maverick talentgathered for the service at St Paul’s Cathedral to celebrate the life of fashion’s “enfant terrible”, who killed himself the day before his mother’s funeral.

Editor-in-chief of US Vogue, Anna Wintour, paid tribute to “a complex and gifted young man”, saying “As a child he loved nothing more than sitting on the roof top and watching birds fly by”.

“His final collection was a battle between dark and light. His was an 18-year career of harnessing his dreams and demons.

“He showed us everything was possible, dreams could become reality. But he has left us with an even more exceptional legacy, a talent that soared like the birds of his childhood above us all.”

Bjork, dressed in a pair of angel wings, performed a haunting rendition of Gloomy Sunday.

In tribute to the designers’ Scottish roots, a bagpiper performed a solo rendition of “Braveheart” for the crowds who gathered outside the cathedral.
