*Hot fashion news* – David Koma for Topshop

NEWGEN recipient David Koma is to join the Topshop Collective this month (February 11). The Georgia-born designer, renowned for his sculptural, body conscious designs in luxe fabrics, is to produce a five-piece capsule collection for the high street retailer. The collection will have a limited run, with just thirty of each piece available; instantly making these items future fashion collectables.

Koma, a graduate of Central St Martins in 2009, uses a signature of heavy embellishments, bold colours and powerful sexuality. His collection for Topshop will remain true to his vision, featuring five designs in luxurious black or beige high stretch mesh and wool with cylindrical silver embellishments – referencing themes from his past mainline collections.

Drawing inspiration from William Pye‘s metal sculptures, the collection pays homage to the designer’s fascination with tough metals and femininity – evoking the feeling of contrast: strong and sculptured, yet womanly and sexual.

The five pieces all accentuate the female silhouette and include a body con dress with a daringly low back, trimmed with silver tube embellishments (£350) – a sleeveless dress with plunging neckline and a leather contrast trim around the bottom (£300) – a halterneck dress with neckline embellishment and two vertical lines that mimic the countours of a woman’s body (£350) and a mini skirt (£275) and a belt (£100) in both black and camel.

Koma, who scooped awards for Central St Martins Best Womenswear Collection in 2007 and the Vauxhall Fashion Scout Merit Award; as well as being awarded the NEWGEN sponsorship, says:

“Topshop signifies youth and modernity and its spirit evokes ‘cool London’.  It was really exciting to work with the Topshop team as I felt they understood me as a designer and appreciated my need to make a high quality product without compromising the design aesthetic, quality of fabric or finishing. They helped make my vision a reality and I’m thrilled with the result.”

Rachael Proud, Senior Buyer for Topshop, concludes:  “David epitomises the directional but feminine look that appeals to our Topshop girl. It was important for the collection to stay true to the luxe element of his work, and to do this we needed to use premium fabrics and his signature shapes and metalwork. Fans of David’s work will not be disappointed.”

The collection will be launched during London Fashion Week and available instore at their Oxford Circus, London and New York branches, from February 16th and also online at topshop.com.

Brilliant piece Kate – saw it on Frost too. Well done, think it was one of the first fashion sites to cover the story including beating the telegraph, times, vogue and grazia! impressive.

will it just be available in the london store or everywhere in the UK?

  6. TT says:

What a great collaboration, I love the way TS goes for edgy and cool designers rather than hype up unaffordable luxe like H&M with Lanvin – some of it worked, but TS still steals the ideas and is ahead.

  7. Is the full collection being shown during their show at LFW or the NewGen exhibition??

  8. megan says:

You would have to be quite slim and quite daring with a couple of these dresses! Amazing though, brilliant that he’s going to be in store at Topshop – but shame it will be a limited run.

  9. OMG to the low-cut backless dress, it’s beautiful!! I want want want.
